- Paper Conservation: Art Latin America 20th Century
Artist: Francisco Zúñiga, (1912 – 1998)
Medium: water color and pencil on paper
Francisco Zúñiga, 1912 – 1998, was a Costa Rican and Mexican artist, known for his painting, drawing and sculpture. Journalist Fernando González Gortázar lists Zúñiga as one of the 100 most notable Mexicans of the 20th century, while the Encyclopædia Britannica calls him “perhaps the best sculptor” of the Mexican political modern style.
This evocative and haunting group of women, drawn in 1967, was badly damaged, with significant losses due to insect infestation. Our paper conservator painstakingly restored this beautiful work close to its original state. The extreme close ups show the process, from the deep gouging to fill and re-colorization.
